BOPP Packing Tape Technical Specifications

A bopp tape specification should combine construction, test condition and measured result. This reference compares tested 40 um and 45 um BOPP carton-sealing grades for peel, tack, holding power, tensile strength, elongation and low-speed unwind. These are tested-grade references, not universal limits; representative cartons and intended equipment should be verified before full use.
What the 40 um and 45 um Test Records Actually Show
Both records were generated at 23 C and 52% RH. The 45 um grade uses a thicker BOPP substrate and shows higher tensile strength and elongation, while peel changes only slightly. Total thickness therefore should not be used alone to predict adhesive performance.
For roll-level context, the 45 Mic Clear BOPP Packing Tape entry shows how film backing and adhesive layer contribute to finished gauge.
Test Item | 40 um | 45 um | Requirement / Condition | Interpretation |

180-degree peel | 5.50 N/25 mm | 5.62 N/25 mm | >=5 N/25 mm | Controlled peel |
Aged peel | 5.02 N/25 mm | 5.06 N/25 mm | >=5 N/25 mm | Retention after aging |
Tensile strength | 35 N/cm | 39 N/cm | >=20 N/cm | Break resistance |

Low-speed unwind | 0.10 N/mm | 0.12 N/mm | <=0.2 N/mm | Low-speed release |

Why the Common Test Condition Matters
Because both records use the same conditioning environment, their results are more comparable than values generated under different conditions. Bare-film haze, COF, wetting tension and MD/TD properties should be checked in the BOPP backing film technical data rather than treated as finished-tape adhesion data.

Peel, Holding and Tack Measure Different Behaviors
Peel adhesion measures resistance to removal, holding power measures movement under sustained parallel load, and initial tack describes early grab. Comparisons should state substrate, angle where relevant, specimen width, dwell and conditioning. Standard steel supports laboratory comparison, but corrugated board still requires representative testing.

Read Tensile Strength and Elongation Together
The 40 um grade recorded 35 N/cm tensile strength and 142% elongation; the 45 um grade recorded 39 N/cm and 152%. These values describe break resistance and deformation, not adhesion. Machine direction, specimen width and slit-edge condition can change the result; use the packing tape tensile strength test data for deeper method detail.
What Low-Speed Unwind Can – and Cannot – Predict
The tested unwind values were 0.10 and 0.12 N/mm against a <=0.2 N/mm requirement. They support low-speed roll comparison only. High-speed case-sealer performance also depends on core fit, winding condition, blade condition, line speed and tape-head tension.
Move From Laboratory Data to Carton Approval
Qualify shortlisted clear carton sealing tape grades on the actual liner lot and intended hand or machine method. Inspect the initial seal and, when relevant, again after 24 h, 72 h and 7 days. For heavier filled cartons, use our heavy-box tape selection and failure-check guide to connect peel, holding power, tensile strength, and loaded-box observations to the actual failure mode. Check edge lifting, bubbles, film tearing, fiber pull and seal movement. Adhesive trace or surface change should be recorded where relevant.

When a Passing Number Still Does Not Predict the Seal
Data Point | Reference | Confirms | Does Not Confirm Alone | Field Check |
Peel | 5.50 / 5.62 N/25 mm | Controlled peel | Rough/dusty carton bond | Actual-carton peel |
Holding | <1 mm, >24 h | Shear resistance | Different flap load | Loaded-carton dwell |
Tensile | 35 / 39 N/cm | Break resistance | Adhesive wet-out | Dispenser trial |
Unwind | 0.10 / 0.12 N/mm | Low-speed release | High-speed tracking | Normal-speed trial |
Conditions That Require Retesting
Retest when surface type, load weight, cargo shape, coating condition, temperature, humidity, sunlight exposure, storage time, transport distance, equipment setting or operator method changes materially. For low temperature or condensation, use the cold weather carton sealing validation workflow. Repeat-order interpretation can also reference adhesive tape production and converting controls, but process capability does not replace carton testing.
Store rolls dry, packaged and away from excessive heat, humidity and direct sunlight. Damaged edges, deformed cores or unusual transport exposure can change unwind and application behavior.
FAQ
What should a bopp tape specification include?
Construction, thickness, adhesive system, peel condition, tack method, holding test, tensile/elongation setup, unwind condition and data status.
Why report aged peel separately?
It shows adhesion retention after the defined aging procedure and should not be merged with the initial peel result.
Why test on the actual carton?
Corrugated roughness, recycled fiber, coatings, dust and flap rebound are not reproduced by every laboratory panel.
What does a tested-grade reference mean?
It describes the identified construction under stated conditions, not a universal limit for every grade, surface, machine or transport route.
